A team that has always intrigued me is the 1972-1973 Boston Celtics. Who put together one of the greatest regular seasons in NBA history, finishing with a 68-14 record the greatest regular season record in Celtics history. Unfortunately a team not remembered in history because they did not win it all.
Led by Hall of Famers John Havlicek, Dave Cowens, Jo Jo White and coached by Tommy Heinsohn, the team showcased relentless defense, unselfish ball movement, and incredible depth.
Although their championship run ended in a grueling seven game series to the eventual champion New York Knicks the 1972–73 Celtics set a standard for team basketball and helped lay the foundation for one of the NBA’s most storied franchises.
The Celtics would go on to win the NBA Championship the very next season and again two years later in 1976. Greatness isn’t always defined by championships, sometimes it’s about raising the bar for everyone who follows.
